Redruth Tennis Club 100 Years Celebration
After a wet morning on Saturday 13th September 2025, the celebrations went ahead in the afternoon, enjoying glorious sunshine at Redruth Tennis Club.
Celebrating 100 years of tennis at Trevingey Lane Reduth, the day started with juniors enjoying court time, and also a Spider-man themed bouncy castle and inflatable darts!
Continuing fine weather ensured that the adult members enjoyed a tournament, organised and run by club member and coach Lloyd.
Refreshments were available throughout the day; including home-made pasties, cold meats, salad and of course plenty of crisps and sweets too!
Inside the clubhouse was a display of the clubs history, including photographs, achievements and a video playing showing (in black & white image) players on grass court using wooden racquets.
A fantastic day in beautiful Cornish weather – what a way to celebrate the ongoing success of Redruth Tennis Club. A massive thank you to everyone involved in the organising of the day, and to the childen, parents and adult club members who came along to help celebrate this milestone.
A Brief History
David and Ellen Penprase owned the original two tennis courts. It was their wish that the courts would be purchased to continue playing tennis after their deaths. Their wills’ stated that the land should be sold to appointed trustees.
Trustees appointed in 1925:
John Archibald Cock, Wireless Engineer.
George Whichcote Manners, Bank Clerk.
John Arnold Trevenen, Solicitor.
John Jeffrey Williamson, Wholesale Draper.
The two tennis courts were purchased for a sum of £70.00. Further land was purchased in 1955 from Ernest Penprase, son of David and Ellen.Tennis had been played on the private courts for many years before that.
The club has continued to improve its facilities…
2010 saw the first set of floodlights and the rebuilding of two of the courts.
2012 the club was awarded funding from the Olympic Fund to build a new clubhouse which was opened in 2014.
Since then, we have gone on to floodlight a further three courts.
The club boosts 6 all weather courts, 5 hard courts (all floodlit) and 1 artificial grass court.
On 28th July 2025 Sandi Proctor President of the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) recently visited the club to celebrate our 100 years.
